Dive into the KS2 National curriculum-related school sessions at Withington Baths!

Our rich heritage means we have lots to share with young learners. We’ve developed a series of engaging workshops for KS2 primary school pupils that tell the story of the baths. All the sessions are based on a 90-minute visit to the baths and can be adapted to fit the requirements of the class teacher. The sessions have been developed with an educational specialist and focus on KS2 National curriculum-related school sessions.

Session 1 - Industrial History Through Investigation

This course focuses on the children as ‘historical detectives’ who look for clues to learn about the baths and the history of the building within the local context. This visit programme feeds into several KS2 curriculum areas including History – investigation, research, wider context, significance, ‘then and now’, and chronological sequencing. STEM – engineering design and construction and Geography – social geography, local facilities, people and local places, geographical/social significance.

Session 2 – Exploring Withington Baths Through Historical Characters

Exploring historical characters, this programme delves into those who were involved in the design of the baths; the people who worked there; visitors who used the facilities. This visit programme feeds into several KS2 curriculum areas including History – investigation, research, wider context, significance, ‘then and now’.  Geography – social geography, local facilities, people, and local places and English and Drama – consideration of character and role in historical context.

Session 3 – Withington Baths – Margaret Ashton and Equality in Society

This programme focuses on the issues of class and gender equality in Edwardian society through the figure of local councillor and women’s campaigner, Margaret Ashton. This visit programme feeds into several KS2 curriculum areas including, history – investigation, research, wider context, significance, ‘then and now’. Geography – social geography, local facilities, people, and local places. English – consideration of character, debating issues in historical context. PSHE – Exploring issues of social and gender inequality and society’s response to this in the historical context. How this has influenced and informed the experiences today. Design & Technology – Creating a textile banner.
